The Idlehouse: Ethical Boutique Accommodation in Port Chalmers, Dunedin.

After 20 years of enjoying the views from our rambling seaside garden, we decided to build a guest cottage onsite with friends, family and the independent traveller in mind.
The Idlehouse lives up to its name, nestled amongst trees and the native birds that spill out from the nearby Orokonui Wildlife Sanctuary, offering seaside views of the bay and surrounding hills.

The elevated, tiny house-style cottage provides a secure self-catering base for you to explore nearby attractions or simply relax for a few days of peace and privacy.
Historic Port Chalmers sits right in the midst of beautiful Otago Harbour, an easy ten minute drive from Dunedin city amid an array of increasingly renowned local walks, beaches and natural attractions.  We are a leisurely stroll from Port's main street precinct where you can stock up on supplies at the local supermarket & visit the historic buildings, cafes, boutiques and studios.

Offset your travel footprint by choosing independent, low-impact accommodation that directly benefits the local community, not exploitative hotel chains and overdevelopment.
No gentrification: the Idlehouse was purpose-built on a modest footprint and no one was displaced from our neighbourhood in favour of short-term rentals.  All food and toiletries supplied in multi-use packaging to minimise waste.  All linens laundered with low-irritant eco-products and sun-dried.  We retained our trees and plant our garden to facilitate the return and retention of native species.  We are more than happy to accommodate your vegetarian and vegan dietary requirements and do our best to serve organic dairy and NZ produce.  We respect your privacy and do not gather or pass on your personal data.
